India has been ranked 51 in the list of 2019 released by the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) by the British Institute ‘The Economist Group’. India has come down to ten places in the Global Democracy Index compared to last year. According to the report, the state of democratic freedom of citizens in India has reduced in a year. In this list, China is in the 153rd position, while Norway is at the top and North Korea is at the 167th position.

The 123rd birth anniversary of Subhash Chandra Bose was celebrated on 23 January 2020. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was born on 23 January 1897. During the second world war, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose traveled to countries such as the Soviet Union, Germany, Japan and sought cooperation against the British government. After this, he established the Azad Hind Fauj in Japan. He also started Azad Hind Radio in Germany. It is believed that he died in a plane crash on 18 August 1945.

3. b. Bangladesh
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina introduced an e-passport facility for citizens of the country on 22 January 2020. Bangladesh has become the first country to introduce this facility in South Asia, where electronic passport service is offered. E-passports will be provided by 69 passport centers in Bangladesh. Passport holder information is stored in e-passport via electric chip and more security features are installed than a traditional passport.

Union Cabinet has decided to extend the tenure of the Commission by six months to 31 July under Article 340 of the Constitution. The Cabinet has also approved the addition of other points in the Commission’s current work area. This includes making entries in the Central List of Other Backward Classes and recommending corrections of any repetitions, ambiguities, inconsistencies, and spelling or transcription errors.

Foreign Minister S.K. Jaishankar and Nigeria’s President Mahmadao Isofo jointly inaugurated the Mahatma Gandhi International Convention Center. It is the first convention center that started in Africa on the 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. This convention center is designed as a spacious, modern and environmentally friendly facility. S Jaishankar is the first foreign minister of India to visit Nigeria.

6. b. Chhattisgarh 

The state of Chhattisgarh has demanded to challenge this central law in the Supreme Court under Article 131 of the Constitution. According to the Chhattisgarh government, this law violates the constitution and interferes with the functions of the state police, which is unconstitutional. This is the second instance when a state has sought to challenge a central law under Article 131 of the Constitution. Earlier, the Government of Kerala had challenged the Citizenship Amendment Act under Article 131 in the Supreme Court.

7. a. The UNCTAD
United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has recently released the Global Investment Trend Monitor Report. This report states that India has been among the top-10 recipients of FDI in 2019. India’s FDI during this period was the US $ 49 billion. UNCTAD was established in the year 1964. It is a permanent intergovernmental body and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

total of 22 children, including 10 girls and 12 boys, have been selected from 12 states for the 22 National Bravery Awards-2019. National Bravery Awards are given to brave children on 26 January every year in India. These awards were started by the Indian Child Welfare Council in the year 1957. A medal, certificate and cash amount are given as prizes. Financial assistance is also provided to all children until they complete school. On January 26, these brave children ride in elephants and participate in the Republic Day Parade.

Indian shooter Divyansh Singh Panwar won the gold medal in the private tournament Meton Cup held in Austria. Divyansh won gold in the men’s 10-meter air rifle event with a score of 249.7. In this event, Deepak Kumar (228 points) and Anjum Moudgil (229) in the women’s category won bronze medals. The Morton Cup is a private tournament where shooters go to their expense to gain international experience.

10. a. Deepa Malik
is the advisory body of the Sports Council of India (AICS), Ministry of Sports. This institution was formed in 2015 by the then Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Its tenure has been extended by three years and veteran sports administrator Vijay Kumar Malhotra will continue as its president. Other prominent players included in the AICS include former shooter Anjali Bhagwat, footballer Renedi Singh, and mountaineer Bachendri Pal. Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has also been included in the council.
